OrbitID: Secure SSO for your Instatus workspace
At Instatus, we’re rolling out a major upgrade to how teams securely access their status pages and internal tools: OrbitID, our new Single Sign-On (SSO) platform.
OrbitID gives your organization centralized, secure access using your existing identity provider (IdP) — so your team can log in with the same credentials and policies you already use internally.
OrbitID is built on technology originally developed by BoxyHQ and extended by our team to make it more user-friendly and easier to use.
🔐 What Is OrbitID?
OrbitID is the identity layer that connects:
- Your organization’s Identity Provider (IdP)
(Okta, Azure AD, Google Workspace, etc.) - Your Instatus workspace
- Secure authentication for your team
With OrbitID, you can:
- Enforce your company’s login policies
- Use SAML / SSO instead of separate passwords
- Control access centrally through your IdP
- Improve security and compliance
🚀 Why We’re Migrating to OrbitID
We’re moving SSO management into OrbitID to:
- Helps us reduce our costs, so we can focus on providing a better service and plans in the future.
- Give customers clearer control over domain verification and access
- Improve long-term maintainability and features.
This migration does not change how your end users log in day-to-day — it improves what happens behind the scenes.
🔄 How to Migrate to OrbitID
Follow these steps to connect your SSO setup to OrbitID:
1. Go to Tasks in Your Instatus Dashboard
Navigate to:
You’ll see a migration task related to SSO / OrbitID.
2. Open the Task
Click on the task.
You’ll automatically be redirected to our secure identity setup environment at OrbitID.
3. You’ll Be Taken to OrbitID
You’ll land in the OrbitID setup flow (on app.orbitid.com) where you’ll configure your SSO connection.
4. Verify Your Domains
OrbitID will ask you to verify the domains associated with your organization.
This ensures:
- Only authorized domains can use your SSO connection
- Access is restricted to your organization
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete domain verification.
5. Choose Your Identity Provider
Select the identity provider your organization uses, such as:
- Okta
- Azure Active Directory
- Google Workspace
- Other SAML-compatible providers
OrbitID will tailor the setup steps based on your choice.
6. Configure Your IdP
In your identity provider:
- Create a new SAML / SSO application
- Use the details shown in OrbitID (ACS URL, Entity ID, etc.)
- Configure attributes as instructed
7. Paste Your Metadata URL
Once your IdP app is set up:
- Copy the Metadata URL (or upload the metadata file) from your identity provider
- Paste it into the field in OrbitID
OrbitID will validate the configuration and complete the connection.
✅ After Setup
Once connected:
- Your team will authenticate via your identity provider
- Access will be controlled by your existing identity policies
- You can manage users from your IdP instead of separate credentials
No changes are required for your public status pages.
